Celebrated poet, Nikki Giovanni has been honored for her significant contributions to literature and activism for her impactful work which has addressed themes of race, gender and social justice. In this special speakers program event, Dr. Leonard Slade will reflect on the life, poetry and impact of his late friend, Giovanni.

Nikki Giovanni was awarded the Frost Medal for Lifetime Achievement posthumously. She has been honored by the Poetry Society of America and Howard University declared February 14 as "Niki Giovanni Day" to celebrate her legacy.

Dr. Leonard Slade is an Emeritus Professor of Africana, Latin American, Caribbean & Latinx Studies, English, Collins Fellow and Citizen Academic Laureate.
