Held during the week of Constitution Day, the Read-Out brings the UAlbany community together to read aloud from books that have been banned, challenged, restricted, or targeted for removal from schools and libraries. Constitution Day offers an opportunity to reflect on the rights and freedoms protected by the U.S. Constitution, including freedom of speech and expression. At the Read-Out, we’re putting those ideas into practice by making space for stories, perspectives, and voices that others have sought to silence.

Students, faculty, staff, and members of the University community are invited to participate as readers or listeners. Readers can select a meaningful, memorable, funny, powerful, or thought-provoking passage from a banned or challenged book to share. Readings should be approximately 2–3 minutes and no longer than 5 minutes so we can hear from as many voices as possible. Not sure what to read? The University Libraries can help you find a banned or challenged title and choose something that speaks to you.

And you don’t have to read to take part! Stop by, listen for a few minutes or stay awhile, discover books that have faced challenges across the country, and help us celebrate the freedom to read together.

About the film
A Nuyorican coming-of-age story set in 1980s Brownsville, Brooklyn, this new film follows Elaine, a girl on the cusp of becoming a teenager, as she navigates the challenges of a chaotic family and a tough and unpredictable neighborhood. "Brownsville Bred" was the only U.S. Latina-directed live-action narrative to earn Oscar eligibility in 2025.

About the director
Elaine Del Valle, multifaceted writer and filmmaker, transmutes her Brooklyn Puerto Rican girlhood into an astonishing variety of works of art: a one-woman show, award-winning short, TV show, YA novel, and now a feature film.

“From Girlhood Trials to Onstage Triumph” proclaimed the New York Times in its 2010 review of her same-titled play. The YA novel, Brownsville Bred, was a finalist for Publishers Weekly’s 2020 BookLife Prize.

Bennett is the author of a major new work, We (The People of The United States) (2026), a book-length poem about America, past, present and future. His book addresses an astonishing range of subjects, including The Beach Boys, Gwendolyn Brooks, the invention of the typewriter, Zora Neale Hurston, Sun Ra, life on Mars, Robert Frost, experimental physics and The Jackson 5.

Booklist called it, “An essential addition to the American poetic canon.”

Bennett’s previous books of poetry, criticism and narrative nonfiction include: Being Property Once Myself (2020), Owed (2020), The Study of Human Life (2022) and Spoken Word: A Cultural History (2023). He serves as professor of literature and Distinguished Chair of the Humanities at MIT.

2026 Engage America: A Century of American Diplomacy

Featured presentation by Tom Selinger, a recently retired U.S. Foreign Service Officer, titled Portraits of American Diplomacy.

Drawing from the rich oral history archives of the Association for Diplomatic Studies and Training (ADST), Selinger will share powerful and personal stories of diplomats — including individuals from New York — who have helped rescue Americans in crisis, opened international markets for American businesses and agriculture, strengthened alliances that protect our collective security, and advanced democratic values around the world. In recognition of America’s 250th Anniversary, Selinger will also highlight fascinating stories from the earliest days of American diplomacy, including how American diplomats in Paris helped secure support critical to winning the Revolutionary War.

Join us for a conversation about politics in America and the prospects for an enduring democracy. Panelists will include: Jonathan Alter, Devlin Barrett and an additional panelist to be announced.

Jonathan Alter is an influential columnist, bestselling author, presidential historian and Emmy Award-winning documentary filmmaker. His newest book is American Reckoning: Inside Trump's Trial―and My Own (2024), a vivid and deeply personal eyewitness account of the historic first criminal trial of a U.S. president and a cri de coeur for American democracy.

The Washington Monthly said, “Alter’s fine, indispensable book offers an understanding of the presidency worthy of Robert Caro and a legal account of a celebrity trial that would have enthralled Dominick Dunne. It is a must-read.” Alter is the author of three New York Times bestsellers about American presidents and covered the Trump felony trial for NYTimes Opinion, The Washington Monthly and Old Goats, his Substack newsletter.

Devlin Barrett, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist who grew up in Troy, is the author of The Department of Revenge: How Trump Took Control of American Justice (2026), a book that “pulls back the curtain on President Trump’s Justice Department and the way he has used it as a tool to settle political scores” (PBS NewsHour). His 2020 book, October Surprise: How the FBI Tried to Save Itself and Crashed an Election, examined the 2016 Presidential election. The Washington Post said it, "delivers an exquisitely sourced indictment of Comey and the bureau he once led."

Barrett is a staff reporter for the New York Times where he covers the Justice Department and FBI. He previously worked for The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, Associated Press, and the New York Post. He has been part of four Pulitzer Prize-winning reporting teams, winning for Public Service, National Reporting, Investigative Reporting and Breaking News Reporting.

- Monday - Friday
- High school age students or older
- 50 student maximum
- One chaperone per ten students is required

Complete the Group Tour Interest Form and allow one week for your request to be reviewed (you will receive additional information via email).
